Dr. Mahesh Kumar Lakhe, Infectious Disease Specialist at Dr. Lakhe’s Healthcare Centre, emphasized on World AIDS Day that HIV is transmitted only through specific body fluids — blood, semen (or pre-ejaculate), vaginal/rectal secretions, and breast milk. He highlighted that casual contact such as hugging, shaking hands, sharing utensils, or exposure to saliva, sweat, tears, or urine does not transmit the virus. According to Dr. Lakhe, HIV transmission requires the infected fluid to enter the body via mucous membranes, broken skin, or injections, underscoring the importance of awareness and preventive measures to reduce risk.
